  • How to Choose Yoga Flooring For Your Studio

Yoga Bar.How to Choose Yoga Flooring For Your Studio

    By Heidi Sonju

When opening a yoga studio, the process is daunting. There are so many options – from location, paint colors, lighting, hiring teachers and so on. However, choosing a yoga surface may be the most important decision you make.

Proper yoga flooring is an essential component to a positive experience. As an owner, there are multiple factors you need to consider such as comfort, cost, durability and the type of practice your studio will promote when choosing your flooring. This helpful guide will ensure you end up with the surface that fits your practice, values and budget.

    Safety

When choosing a floor, safety should be your main concern. Yoga is practiced directly on the floor and should be free of all odors, nails and other defects.

More often than not, studios install flooring not designed for yoga use, such as carpet or wood. This leads to a variety of safety problems, including unstable and slippery footing, abrasiveness and minimal shock absorption. Not to mention the odor you will have with carpet and the splitting of the hardwood floors from extreme use, moisture and heat.

Proper flooring provides your clients enough space to move freely on a slip-resistant platform to ensure stability in more advanced poses. Dollamur Sport Surfaces (Dollamur) has applied these ideas to its new yoga flooring system. The easy-to-install, wall-to-wall surface maximizes studio space with an anti-skid layer to ensure clients’ hands and inversions do not falter.

Dollamur yoga flooring is available in ½”, ¾” and 1” thickness to create a superior shock-absorbing platform useful for clients trying inversions or older clients with joint issues, yet photo 1meets the aesthetics need for hardwood.

    Sanitary and Cleaning Considerations

Your yoga floor should be chosen with cleaning and sanitary considerations in mind. Having a surface not easily and thoroughly cleaned can result in a multitude of problems. Such issues include mold, fungi, odor and increased possibilities of contracting STAPH infections.

The floor should not absorb water nor stay wet for long periods of time. Look for a surface that allows for evaporation and features anti-microbial properties. Finally, be sure your flooring does not release particles, filaments or harmful outgases. The goal should be to provide a dust-free, less toxic and hypoallergenic yoga practicing environment.

    Style of Practice

If you practice Bikram or hot yoga, you need a floor that can withstand the heat nor expand or contract with higher temperatures. Also, make sure your flooring system will not separate in the heat, which can cause bubbling and cracking on the yoga mat surface.

    Durability

When choosing a flooring system, the largest deciding factor – other than general cost – is value. Are you getting what you paid for? Is the surface environmentally-friendly? Does it have a special design or surface texture? Does it come with a limited product warranty? It is important to get answers to these questions before moving forward.studio

    Time to Shop

Knowing what you are looking for in yoga flooring is very important. This guide is designed to point you in the right direction and help find the perfect surface for your practice, priorities, lifestyle, values and budget.

Happy shopping and, as always, “Namaste.”

  • Dollamur Sports Surfaces & Swain Mats Help Honor Fallen Heroes at the 2014 Navy SEAL Memorial Challenge

Over this Memorial Day weekend, Dollamur Sports Surfaces & Swain Mats (a Dollamur company) helped support and honor the U.S. Navy SEALs by taking part in the 2014 Navy SEAL Memorial Challenge. We gladly donated the mats used during the event’s Special Fitness Workout honoring Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy and all Naval Special Warfare (NSW) fallen heroes. Eighty-nine athletes, including Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, and former special operators participated in the workout to honor and represent the 89 Fallen Heros that the NSW community has lost during training and combat missions since September 11, 2001. Participants helped raise money for the Navy SEAL Foundation, which provides immediate and ongoing assistance to the Naval Special Warfare community and their families. We were so honored to have been given the opportunity to participate in such an amazing fundraiser that helps support the families of these fallen soldiers. Here are a few pictures that Costolo tweeted out from the event:

In addition to the fitness workout, the athletic fundraiser also included the Tribute Cup Golf Tournament and BBQ reception at Half Moon Bay Golf Links at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Dollamur is already looking forward to participating in next year’s event and the opportunity to support our fallen heroes and their families!
