  • How to Choose Yoga Flooring For Your Studio

Yoga Bar.How to Choose Yoga Flooring For Your Studio

    By Heidi Sonju

When opening a yoga studio, the process is daunting. There are so many options – from location, paint colors, lighting, hiring teachers and so on. However, choosing a yoga surface may be the most important decision you make.

Proper yoga flooring is an essential component to a positive experience. As an owner, there are multiple factors you need to consider such as comfort, cost, durability and the type of practice your studio will promote when choosing your flooring. This helpful guide will ensure you end up with the surface that fits your practice, values and budget.

    Safety

When choosing a floor, safety should be your main concern. Yoga is practiced directly on the floor and should be free of all odors, nails and other defects.

More often than not, studios install flooring not designed for yoga use, such as carpet or wood. This leads to a variety of safety problems, including unstable and slippery footing, abrasiveness and minimal shock absorption. Not to mention the odor you will have with carpet and the splitting of the hardwood floors from extreme use, moisture and heat.

Proper flooring provides your clients enough space to move freely on a slip-resistant platform to ensure stability in more advanced poses. Dollamur Sport Surfaces (Dollamur) has applied these ideas to its new yoga flooring system. The easy-to-install, wall-to-wall surface maximizes studio space with an anti-skid layer to ensure clients’ hands and inversions do not falter.

Dollamur yoga flooring is available in ½”, ¾” and 1” thickness to create a superior shock-absorbing platform useful for clients trying inversions or older clients with joint issues, yet photo 1meets the aesthetics need for hardwood.

    Sanitary and Cleaning Considerations

Your yoga floor should be chosen with cleaning and sanitary considerations in mind. Having a surface not easily and thoroughly cleaned can result in a multitude of problems. Such issues include mold, fungi, odor and increased possibilities of contracting STAPH infections.

The floor should not absorb water nor stay wet for long periods of time. Look for a surface that allows for evaporation and features anti-microbial properties. Finally, be sure your flooring does not release particles, filaments or harmful outgases. The goal should be to provide a dust-free, less toxic and hypoallergenic yoga practicing environment.

    Style of Practice

If you practice Bikram or hot yoga, you need a floor that can withstand the heat nor expand or contract with higher temperatures. Also, make sure your flooring system will not separate in the heat, which can cause bubbling and cracking on the yoga mat surface.

    Durability

When choosing a flooring system, the largest deciding factor – other than general cost – is value. Are you getting what you paid for? Is the surface environmentally-friendly? Does it have a special design or surface texture? Does it come with a limited product warranty? It is important to get answers to these questions before moving forward.studio

    Time to Shop

Knowing what you are looking for in yoga flooring is very important. This guide is designed to point you in the right direction and help find the perfect surface for your practice, priorities, lifestyle, values and budget.

Happy shopping and, as always, “Namaste.”

  • Dollamur Featured in Tuscaloosa news

As CEO of Dollamur Sports Surfaces LP, Ochsenreiter oversees North America’s largest manufacturer and distributor of high-performance specialty mats that keep wrestlers, gymnasts, cheerleaders, martial artists, Cross-

Fitters and military combatants from letting the hard floor defeat them.

Dollamur’s headquarters and plant will churn out more than 6.3 million square feet of foam mats this year — enough to cover a football field 60 times.

These specialty mats will be used everywhere from spare bedrooms to some of the most prestigious sporting events around the globe, including the Wrestling World Championship in Las Vegas next September.

Even the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have Dollamur underfoot.

“We apply foam to vinyl or carpet — that’s all we do,” Ochsenreiter says. “And we’re very, very good at it. If you buy a mat for your son or your grandson to wrestle on in the garage, you’re getting the exact same quality as the U.S. Junior Olympic Trials.”

Dollamur was formed in 1996 by Jeff Anderson, who set up shop in Fort Worth as an extension of the family business in Canada. The name is a mashing of his parents’ first names, Dolly and Murray.
