  • MMA Melee Q&A with Marti Malloy

mmameleeHow did you get into Judo? How long have you been doing it?

I joined a free Judo class at a Morale, Welfare and Recreation gym with my brothers and have been practicing it since I was six years old.

Do you study any other martial arts?

I have dabbled in Jiu Jitsu over the years but try to focus mainly on Judo.

Ronda Rousey is the first woman to ever medal at the Olympics for the USA? (Have there been anymore) (Ronda was the first, I was the second, Kayla Harrison took the first ever Judo gold at the Olympics for the USA in London). Has she been a lot of talk around the Judo community since her UFC super stardom and being in movies etc.?

Yes, Ronda is one of the most exciting MMA athletes to watch and with her roots in Judo, I am pulling for her. The attention she has been receiving is well-deserved and is the product of an excellent work ethic.

Do you train any other martial arts or would you ever be interested in transitioning to MMA? Do you watch the UFC or any other MMA organization?

I am not interested in practicing MMA at this juncture in my martial arts career, although I do enjoy watching. I consider myself a “Judo purist.”

Some of the best takedowns or flash, as you will, is a lot of Judo Trips and Throws.  It really gets the crowd going.  Are there any fighters you specifically like to watch?

I enjoy watching Ronda Rousey – she’s an amazing fighter. Having competed against her growing up, I can say that she is nothing but a professional both on and off the mat. I am also a huge fan of Daniel Cormier, who is also an Olympic medalist in wrestling and a great person in and out of the octagon.

What are you future plans and goals?

Currently, I’m training around-the-clock with the San Jose State Judo team and my coaches, Mike Swain and Shintaro Nakano, for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, where I hope to win gold. Before then, I will be traveling to compete in elite Olympic qualifiers around the world, including the World Championships this August in Kazakhstan, where I also hope to take the title.

Additionally, as a Dollamur Sport Surfaces’ athlete, training on their high-performance mats has provided me with the peace-of-mind to push myself to the next level safely and efficiently.

Do you have any tutorial videos or techniques you can share with us that may be your favorite or go-to move?

  • Marti Malloy Featured in Whidbey News Times

Our Friend and Dollamur Athlete Marti Malloy was featured in the Whidbey News Times this past weekend. Check out the article below!

Marti Fighting Worlds. It seems even Olympic medalists have to do their own laundry.

Oak Harbor High School graduate Marti Malloy, who won a bronze medal in judo in the 2012 London Olympics, discussed her career during a phone interview last month in between folding clothes at a San Jose laundromat.

Malloy said her life has become a cycle of training, flying and competing, all squeezed around graduate school.

Winning an Olympic medal brought the expected positive impact, Malloy said, but it also stirred up some negative feedback.

“I am a lot more confident after the Olympics,” Malloy said. “I sacrifice so much time training, it is great to see all that lead up to winning.”

However, it is “amazing what people will say to you,” she said.

“I get messages that are critical; I’ve seen a side of people I didn’t want to see.”

Malloy’s athletic goals are to win a world championship and an Olympic gold medal.

After finishing second in the World Cup last year, Malloy felt this would be her year to finish at the top of the podium ---- then she saw the draw.

  • Congrats to Marti Malloy - Dollamur Athlete, for Gold in Miami

U.S. Olympic Bronze Medalist Marti Malloy got exactly what she wanted: “a win on home soil,” a gold medal victory at the first super-elite international Grand Prix ever held in the United States.

"When I heard there was going to be a Grand Prix on home soil, I wanted gold,” said Malloy of San Jose, CA, on the way to the podium to collect her medal. “This is all I've thought about. I wanted a win on home soil. I've been training very hard for this tournament for the last few months. I wanted to hear the National Anthem, and I wanted U.S. supporters to hear it on home soil. It was great to be on the mat and to hear everyone cheer to USA. It is amazing to feel that support, and I am very proud."

This would be the only medal for the United States today, the first day of competition among more than 40 nations that converged on Miami for a shot at top competition, the valuable international ranking points and a purse worth $100,000. In fact, no nation won more than one gold medal, and Hungary came in first among nations having won only two silver medals and no bronze. For complete results and brackets, go to IPPON.ORG.

Malloy, who trains at the USA Judo National Training Site, San Jose State Judo Club in San Jose, CA, made history last summer when she took a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games alongside Kayla Harrison, who took the nation’s first Olympic gold medal in judo. The momentum has continued on the world stage with the United States climbing the podium at a number of high-profile tournaments around the world, and Malloy added to that momentum this afternoon in Miami.
